Why Should I Hire an Estate Planning Attorney?

Why should I hire an estate planning attorney? I can do my estate plan from the comfort of my couch in a few minutes and just hit print! Right?

No, unfortunately you can’t.

It sounds nice but at that point you’ll have a pile of paperwork, and we don’t really know what’s in it. We hope it works someday when the time comes, but how do you really know if what’s in it is most appropriate for your family or that it’s actually going to work when the time comes? How do you test your documents? We would need to die and I don’t recommend it if we’re just testing documents!

The only way to know that you have the right documents, that what’s in your documents is most appropriate for your family, and that your plan will actually work when it’s supposed to is by working with an estate planning attorney. Somebody that will sit down, learn about your family, learn about your goals, structure the right plan to best accomplish your goals and most importantly give you the peace of mind that the plan will actually work when the time comes.

Now, remember you don’t hire an estate planning attorney for documents. That’s what you see in the tangible part of the process. You’re really paying that attorney for their legal knowledge and advice that your plan is the right plan for your family and that your wishes will actually be upheld. That doesn’t mean you have to go spend an obscene amount of money for an estate planning attorney in San Diego. Find an attorney who’s reasonably priced who focuses just on estate planning because there are a lot of nuances that you have to know with this area of law. Of course, you also need to find an attorney that you trust and get along with during the process.

If you haven’t found that attorney yet, get in touch with us. We’d love to sit down with you and see if we’re the right fit.
